Special Worship Celebrations
- Ash Wednesday - We celebrate the beginning of the Lenten Season with a worship celebration that calls us to reflect on our mortality and need for God. The service ends with the pastors implementing the ashes on the forehead of each person present. The ashes come from the palm branches waved on Palm Sunday the previous year.
- Holy Week – We have noon Lunch Lifts with Worship each day of the week prior to Easter. These “lifts” occur in The Coan Fellowship Hall and different pastors from around the community come and share their hearts as we move toward Good Friday. Included in this week of preparation are two other special celebrations; Holy Thursday where we remember the Lord Jesus Christ’s Last Supper and Good Friday where the church is laid bare with music and drama.
- Easter Sunrise – McDonough First UMC is the host church for the City of McDonough Sunrise Service on the Square in McDonough. We bring together music and worship leader from around the city to proclaim the glory of Easter. Breakfast is served afterwards by our United Methodist Men
- Heritage Sunday – We celebrate a grand heritage at McDonough First UMC, remember those who have gone before and celebrating the great things happening now. Past pastors are invited back to share and remember with us. This is usually the last Sunday in April
- Camp Meeting – McDonough First is the host church for Shingleroof Camp meeting that held the third Thursday after the second Sunday every July. Shingleroom has a glorious history from days gone by but also a grand future as we relive the days of gratitude for God’s blessing as a community. All denominations gather at Shingleroof. On that Sunday we only have 8:30 Worship Celebration at the main campus. We move our Sunday school and 11:00 Worship to the Campground located between Highway 155 and Camp Ground Road in McDonough. For more information click HERE to check out their web site.
- World Wide Communion, Laity Sunday, Memorial Day, and other events are incorporated in our worship experiences throughout the year
- Christmas Eve – We offer two powerful Christmas Eve celebrations on December 24 each year. At 5:00 PM we have the Live Nativity with Homily and at 11:00 we have a full traditional service of worship and communion. These services have beautiful music and powerful imagery.
